Travertine Cleaning and Polishing
Travertine is a beautiful, luxurious stone and a form of limestone. It comes in a wide range of wall or floor tiles, including tumbled, honed, and polished. However, travertine is much softer and more porous than limestone, making it more susceptible to grease and grime soiling caused by foot traffic. Therefore, regular cleaning, vacuuming, and sealing are required to keep it clean.
All natural stone needs to be maintained, and travertine is no exception. Here are some common issues that can occur with travertine:
- The honeycomb structure of travertine makes it porous, like a sponge. If the pores are not protected with a sealer, they will fill with dirt, which can become ingrained in the stone and make it difficult to clean.
- Travertine is acid-sensitive. Using acidic cleaning products can cause holes to appear in the stone, especially with tumbled and honed travertine tiles. These holes will need to be filled with a resin or grout and then ground down to a honed finish.
- Another common issue with new travertine floors is that the tiles were not properly cleaned of grout after installation. This can result in a smear of grout on the surface, known as grout haze. Sealing the floor without removing the grout haze will compound the problem, resulting in a floor that always looks patchy and hazy.
